To commemorate the Stonewall Riots, whose commemoration falls during the month of June, the Academic Senate of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna approved, as a motion, the following statement.

"During the month of June marks the commemoration of the Stonewall Riots, which marked the beginning of the social emancipation movement of the LGBTQI+ community. Since then important steps forward have been taken, however, as President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella recalled last May 17 (International Day Against Homo-Lesbo-Bi-Transphobia), still today "There are more than sixty countries in the world wherehomosexuality is punished with imprisonment, in some still even risking the death penalty." Even "Italy is not immune from episodes of homotransfobia: people discriminated against, crushed by prejudice, often resulting in unacceptable hate speech, verbally and physically assaulted."

In light of this, the Sant'Anna School again affirms its support for the promotion of the rights of LGBT+ individuals and community, countering discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sexual characteristics with every means at its disposal. The Sant'Anna School as a public institution devoted to education and research recognizes itself in the commitment expressed by President Sergio Mattarella "to provide, especially to new generations, the tools to understand the diversity of existences and different human experiences, for an inclusive society that respects identities."

The Sant'Anna School, as an open community, is well aware that intolerance and indifference pose serious risks to democratic coexistence and therefore promotes the principles of freedom and equality contained in the Constitution and transcending all political and party affiliations . Therefore, the Sant'Anna School celebrates the June anniversary and calls on its academic community to work nationally and internationally to eliminate all discrimination based onsexual orientation and gender identity that offends the dignity of the person and to promote a more inclusive and open society .
